Effect of Pulsatile Cardiopulmonary Bypass on Renal Function

Abstract
The pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass is effective for minimizing the damage of organs from extracorporeal circulation.
1. In this paper, we studied effects of pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass on renal function. Pulsatile flow delivered by pusatile assist device (P. A. D) with Datascope system 80 and a roller pump in 12 patients, and non-pulsatile flow induced by a roller pump was used in 16 patients at the same mean flow rate.
2. Renal function study included urine volume, creatine clearance and urea clearance. Blood and urine samples were taken before, during and after bypass, and on the post-operative period.
3. Urine volume was not significant between two groups. Creatine clearance and urea clearance recovered immediately after surgery in the pulsatile flow group.
4. It can be concluded that pulsatile cardiopulmonary bypass is more benefical than nonpulsatile type on the renal function during and after bypass.
